Competition swimwear

If you're swimming competitively, you've probably kept your eye on the world records, other famous swimmers, and the techniques they use.  Once of the things you will have inevitably noticed is that, when they made the switch in swim suits a few Olympics ago, there was a definite and visible shift in the performance of the athletes.  This showed us, without a doubt, that competition swimwear makes a difference in the performance of those who wear it.

Competition swimwear is produced by a number of big name companies, with the most reputable being Nike, Speedo, and Body Glove (all of whom have been making competition swimwear for long periods of time and do so reliably).  The materials used will vary depending on the exact outfit, but they have a tendency to be made of Nylon, Spandex, Polyester, PBT, and Lycra.

Nylon is the cheapest material available for swimsuit construction, so vying for swimwear of this nature means you'll be paying less.  In general, these swimsuits will also be less durable than their cousins made from polyester and PBT.  Lycra can be combined with nylon in order to create a somewhat more durable set, and this particular combination also leads to be best fitting competition swimwear available (which will definitely impact your speed).  PBT and polyester tend to be the most durable of the options that you have.

The exact construction may also vary, but making sure it stays tight with no potential to come loose and nothing that increases drag remain the only real construction factors that matter.
